Student Stories: Valerie

I embarked on the GMAS Patient Transport Service (PTS) induction course in February 2003, having completed the entrance exam, driving test, fitness test and interview. I recently became a mentor for the Bury group of the PTS and this has enabled me to demonstrate my skills in a training capacity. In the future I hope to become a student in the paramedic emergency service (PES) but I am aware that I need to improve my academic skills first.
When I heard that the education, training and development (ETD) team were providing a maths and English taster training session I jumped at the chance to develop my skills. The opportunity to attend these sessions at the GMAS training centre with like-minded colleagues was very appealing. The taster session was informative and well presented and I signed up for the full course straight away - it is going well so far.
Pursuing these qualifications has enabled me to be successful at entrance exam level and has provided me with evidence of competence for my interview. It has allowed me to promote my experience of my work as a clinical practice mentor and has showed my commitment to the academic requirements the role of a paramedic requires.
