Student Stories: Paul

I’ve never been confident with my English. In the past I’ve always had jobs that have dealt more with figures and numbers which is lucky as I’m pretty good with maths, but since joining the Construction Partnership I’ve been promoted, as an officer I’m expected to produce reports.
In my last appraisal, my Line Manager suggested there were a few issues related to my literacy that I needed to address. It could have been embarrassing, it’s not the sort of thing that you would want people to know about, but then I realised that it had held me back for 43 years and perhaps it was time I did something about it.
I started looking around for some help but at the time I couldn’t find anything but then just before Christmas I saw an advert for Test the Directorate and went along for a Skills Check. I signed up for the first ‘Get On at Work’ literacy course that ran in February and passed my Level 2 in March.
The course was great – a real confidence boost. We revisited the rules of grammar and learnt some handy hint to improve spelling and I got a recognised English qualification.'
