RaW E-newsletter?
Tuesday 15 January 2008
Welcome to the latest newsletter from RaW the BBC's biggest adult literacy campaign. With your help we aim to encourage adults to improve their reading and writing.
This year RaW is focusing on resources to help parents read more with their children with the Max and Lara's Amazing Travelling Space Circus books.
Based on the success of these family learning resources we have run a circus themed touring festival and are now launching a short story writing competition - read on to find out more!
The RaW festival has come to an end!
BBC RaW's festival with Max and Lara's Amazing Travelling Space Circus finished up in Sunderland, following a successful eight week tour across England and Wales. Overall the festival reached over 26,000 people!
Designed to appeal to both children and adults, the festival was created to help parents with reading and writing difficulties to get more out of story telling. For highlights and more info, visit the festival section on the RaW website: www.bbc.co.uk/raw.
RaW Short Story Writing Competition
RaW is asking adults to write a children's short story using characters from the Max and Lara books. The best stories will be published in a RaW book and fantastic prizes including family cinema tickets for a year are up for grabs.
Story writing workshops can be a great family activity on a cold winter day, and children's drawings to accompany an adult's story are very welcome.
Stories won't be judged on spelling or grammar, it's the originality that counts, so everyone can have a go!
RaW centres can order competition booklets and posters now, or go online for workshop ideas. Competition closing date - 31st January 2008.
Max and Lara books - free to RaW partners
Don't miss out on the four Max and Lara storybooks - perfect for parents and children to read together. As a RaW partner you should have received bulk copies of the books already, but if not you can sign up to order free of charge on the RaW website.
RaW Online
Don't forget to regularly check out RaW online. There are some great games and online video resources to help adults get the most out of reading with their children. Currently we have an interactive 'Reading Stories' activity with Gail Porter and Terry Wogan talks about reading to his grandchildren.
Don't miss the new story writing fact-sheets with Lenny Henry, perfect for people looking for inspiration to write their first story.
There are also some great ideas on how to use the resources in the online Ideas Bank.
RaW Quizzes
There are over 40 RaW quizzes available to download on the RaW website - covering topics such as family, travel, film and music.
